1. Income Tax Registration
Every business—no matter how small—must register with SARS for income tax. If you’re operating as a company, this registration usually happens automatically when you register with the CIPC. Sole proprietors and freelancers must register separately using their personal tax number or apply for one if they don’t already have it.
2. VAT Registration
You must register for VAT if your business generates more than R1 million in taxable turnover within any 12-month period. Voluntary VAT registration is allowed if your turnover exceeds R50,000 in 12 months, and there are benefits such as input tax credits.
Pro tip: Don’t wait until you’ve crossed the threshold—monitor your revenue monthly and register in advance if needed.
3. PAYE, UIF & SDL Registration
If your business is hiring employees (even just one), you are legally required to register for:
- PAYE (Pay-As-You-Earn)
- UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund)
- SDL (Skills Development Levy, if annual payroll exceeds R500,000)
These deductions are submitted monthly via EMP201 returns and reconciled annually through EMP501.
4. Individual Tax Numbers for Directors & Employees
Every working individual in your business—directors included—needs a tax reference number. If you’re formalising your team or preparing for payroll, this is a foundational step that helps avoid delays when issuing IRP5s and setting up employee records with SARS.
5. Post-Registration Compliance Setup
Getting registered is only half the battle. You’ll also need to:
- Activate your eFiling profile
- Set up reminders for monthly and annual returns
- Keep records of all SARS correspondences
- Ensure someone in your business understands EMP201/EMP501 submission cycles—or outsource it to professionals
